Mandaluyong City Hall Grounds, Mandaluyong City 13 April 2011 Riding an electric tricycle to formally launch the project, President Benigno S. Aquino III led the turnover of 20 Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded e-tricycles to the Mandaluyong City government in a ceremony held at the city hall grounds. The event marked an important first step towards a sustainable, energy-efficient transport model for the country. In his message, President Aquino said that the e-tricycles is part of the Philippine Energy Efficiency Project of the Department of Energy (DoE) in partnership with the ADB, noting that this is the long-term solution to the country’s recurring problem of high oil prices and dependency on imported oil while at the same time reducing carbon dioxide emission. “At present, we have roughly 3.5 million motorcycles and tricycles that emit close to 10 million tons of harmful gases and use more than 2 billion dollars worth of imported oil each year. By shifting from tricycles that run on expensive fuels to electric ones, we expect to reduce the overall pollution level and increase the income of tricycle drivers significantly at the same time. Each of them can now save approximately 200 pesos since the cost of electricity used by the e-tricycles is cheaper compared to the usual cost of fuel,” the President stated. The e-tricycle has a seating capacity of 6-8 passengers and uses lithium ion batteries that are commonly used in laptop computers and mobile phones. The
